Have Thinning Hair? Ways You Can Change Your Thinning Hair

Sep.28,2022
This entry was posted in Care By Bailee

In our perception, thick, lush hair is a sign of beauty, so thinning hair can make us feel unattractive. That's why many women seek hair replacement therapies and "ultra-realistic" human hair wigs, but these therapies and expensive wigs aren't cheap. Hair restoration procedures can cost between $4,000 and $15,000, while high-end, realistic-looking human hair wigs can cost up to $1,000 a pop. For women who are just starting to lose their hair, spending this much money on surgery or wigs can feel overwhelming.
Fortunately, there are less expensive options that can give you back the hair volume you're missing. If you have thinning hair, topper and extensions are a great way to add some "oomph" to your hair. Even better, they're easy to use, too. There are some styles you can simply clip in, shake out, and go about your day. There are many factors that go into deciding between bobby pins and extensions, and this article will walk you through the pros and cons of each.

Hair extensions

Hair extensions are attached underneath the top layer of hair to add volume to the hair in all directions. Ideal for people experiencing overall hair loss, rather than hair loss in a few specific areas. The three most common types of hair extensions are

1. Clip-in hair extensions

1. Clip-in hair extensions

Pros

Easy to use. It is easy to clip in your own hair.
Inexpensive. If you're new to hair extensions and want to try a different look, clip-in extensions are a great way to go. You can find clip-in hair extension kits online for as low as $20.
Customizable. Send your clip-in extensions to a stylist to match your hairstyle, to you customize your clip-in extensions and give you the most natural look possible.

Disadvantages

X Easy to fall out. Poorly done clip-in hair extensions can transfer or fall out within a day. Re-positioning your hair in public can be a bit awkward.
X Low quality. You can find human hair clip-in extensions, but more often than not clip-in extensions are made of lower quality synthetic hair.
X Bad for very thin hair. If you have very thin hair, clip-in extensions don't work well because they are bulky and the marks will be very visible.

2. Tape-in hair extensions

2. Tape-in hair extensions

Pros

Long lasting. Tape-in hair extensions are made with a "sticky" double panel similar to tape, which, as the name implies, is taped to your scalp for your natural hair.
Friendly to native hair. Tape-like hair extensions won't tear or pull your hair like clip-in extensions do.
Reusable. As your hair grows out from underneath the bands, you can remove them and reuse the hair with new bands.
Multiple styles. Side braids. Ballet bun. Ponytail braids. The styling options for banded hair extensions are endless.

Disadvantages

X Duration. Taping usually only lasts about a month before the hair underneath grows out and you have to remove and reinstall them.
X Difficult to apply. Tape-in hair extensions are designed to stay in place. If they aren't put in the right way, you're stuck with a crooked hairstyle. You need to go to a stylist and get your tie extensions put in.
X Cannot use oil-based styling products. Any product that contains oil will loosen the hair extensions and cause them to slip out.
X High cost. Tape-in hair extensions are expensive, ranging from $300 to $2,300 for a set, and you have to pay a stylist to install and remove them.

3.Sew-In Weave Extensions

3.Sew-In Weave Extensions

Pros

Long service life. The stitched weave style lasts up to three months. No need to take them out before going to bed. No need to worry about whether they will come off when using oil-based products.
Promotes hair growth. Sutured hair extensions can actually promote hair growth. Once sewn in, you are free to style the "fake" sewn-in hair any way you like, while the hair growing out of your head gets a break from styling tools and products.
Styling opportunities. Want to go from waist-length waves to a crisp bob overnight? Go to your stylist and ask her to give you a new extensions.
Good quality. Most sew-in hair extensions are made from high-quality human hair.

Disadvantages

X Longevity. Sew-in hair extensions take two to five hours.
X High cost. The cost of sew-in extensions can range from $200 to $800, plus the cost of having a stylist sew them in, which can be higher.
X Difficult to clean. Thoroughly cleaning the roots of hair extensions can be difficult because rubbing the roots too hard can loosen the extensions, so you'll have some dirt on your scalp.
X Not good for thin hair. If you don't have a good natural hair volume, you may not be able to get a good look

TOPPERS

Sometimes referred to as a "half wig" or "top piece," a top piece is a hair piece placed on top of your head that blends in with the natural hair underneath.

Top Piece

Pros

Hair loss/thinning hair friendly. If you are experiencing hair loss or your hair is thinning, toppers are a great option.
Natural. When you find a topper that matches your natural hair texture exactly and is well structured, it looks very natural. Some synthetic wigs look even more "real" than high-end human hair wigs.
Good for summer. Wigs get hot in the summer. But top piece don't. Because only part of the hair is covered, the scalp has room to breathe.

Disadvantages

X Not for thinning hair. The top of your hair needs hair to be pinned down. If you don't have enough hair, bobby pins won't clip in. Also, clips tend to tear your hair, so it may pull out what's left of your hair.
X Difficult to match colors. If you want your wig to look natural, it needs to match the texture and color of your bio hair exactly. If you can't find a matching color, you will have to dye your hair to match your wig.
X Difficult to style. You need to do your natural hair separately from the top so you don't pull on the top clip and pull your hair out. Blending the two can be tricky.

We hope this guide will help you decide whether to wear toppers or hair extensions. Have other pros or cons to tell us about? Please drop us a line in the comments.

How long can you leave hair extensions in your hair?

Even the best hair extensions need to be replaced from time to time, especially if you want to avoid sad, scraggly strands. The frequency with which you must replace extensions is determined by the type you have: Fusion extensions (every 3-4 months), tape-in hair extensions (4-8 weeks), or hand-tied extensions (3-4 months).

Can you sleep with hair extensions in?

Women who prefer permanent hair extensions, such as fusions, tape-ins, machine or hand-tied wefts, can wear them for several months without having to remove them before going to bed. So, the short answer to the question "can you sleep with hair extensions" is yes!

Are half wigs good for your hair?

Half wigs are an excellent way to maximize the potential of your natural hair, allowing your face to be framed by the natural beauty of your own hair while the half wig creates a fabulous fullness from the crown to the back. Half head wigs have a unique cap design that is made of an elasticated soft mesh cap.
