Apart from the various kinds of textures of wigs out there, there are a variety of different sizes. And just like the various wigs textures, it can be confusing to choose the right size of wigs.

Knowing how to measure your head for the right wig size is however only part of the solution. It is also important to understand how the industry categorizes the various wig sizes so you can know which size to buy. The following are some of the general wig sizes you may see when buying a wig and what they mean.

1. Average wig Cap Size

The first thing you need to decide is your budget. Keep in mind that lace front wigs vary greatly in pricing depending on the texture of the wig, the color of the wig, and even the length of the wig. Therefore, determining your budget is about so much more than just stating that you want to spend $300.

2. Petite Wig Cap Size

As the name suggests, this is a wig size that is smaller than the average wig size. The petite wig cap size measures between 51 and 54 cm or 20 and 21.25 inches. This size of the wig is normally not as available as the average wig. But if you have a smaller head than the average woman, the perfect fit for you may be the petite wig cap size.

3. Large Wig Cap Size

This category is reserved for the largest wigs in the market with dimensions that measure larger than 57cm or 22.5 to 24 inches. They are rare and you may only find a few in the market, but a large wig may be necessary for you if an average wig doesn’t feel like the right size.

How to Measure your Head for a Wig

It is absolutely crucial that you find the right wig size for your head. Although some wigs are adjustable to fit your head, they can only be adjusted up to a point, meaning you may not be able to comfortably adjust a large wig to fit a small head.

Fortunately, measuring your head for a wig is a simple process. The following simple steps will guide you to find the perfect wig size for your head;

Step 1: Begin by pulling all your hair up and away from your face to keep it from interfering with the process. You may also want to secure your hair with a clip or hair band to keep it from slipping when you're in the process of measuring your head. If your hair is too short to stay up, you can use a cloth headband to hold it back.

Step 2: A flexile tape is the best tool to use in this case. Lay the tape at the back of your head, making sure that it touches the base of your skull, where the wig will end, and then pull it slightly forward just above your ears.

Make sure that the end point of the tape is positioned in the middle of your front hairline. The measurement you get is the circumference of your head. Note this measurement down.

Step 3: Now, place the end of the flexible measuring tape just above one ear and then pull it across the top of your head to stop at the other ear. Hold it firmly in this new position and check the measurement. This measures the distance from one ear to another. Note down this measurement.

Step 4: Let your hair down and then place the tape at the center of your forehead. Pull the tape gently down the center of your head until you get to the nape of the neck. Hold the tape in this position as securely as you can and then check the measurement. This is the measurement of the distance between the front and back of your head. Note it down.

Step 5: With all aspects of your head measured, use the measurements and the chart below to determine the right-sized wig to purchase

Aside from these measurements, there are factors that you must keep in mind when choosing the size of the wig you want to purchase. The following are just some of them;

• If you have a petite body frame and a full head of hair, that is moderate in length, then you can choose the petite size. If on the other hand, your natural hair is longer, a larger size wig will prove advantageous.

• If on the other hand, you have a more moderate build and full head of natural moderate-length hair, then the "Average" size is probably ideal for you. You should however go a size higher if you have longer hair or your natural hair is sparse or thin.

• If you have a large body frame and the circumference of your head measures more than 22.5 inches, then a “Large” size is probably ideal. You can go down a size if your natural hair is sparse or thin.
